Anasuya Sengupta Becomes First Indian To Win Best Actress At Cannes Film Festival.

Kolkata-Born Actress Anasuya Sengupta became the first Indian to win an award at the Cannes Film Festival. Anasuya received the acting award for her performance in Bulgarian director Constantin Bojanov’s ‘The Shameless’. The movie premiered in the ‘Un Certain Regard’ category at the festival.

Anasuya Sengupta Wins Best Actress Award At Cannes 2024:

In the movie ‘The Shameless’, Anasuya played the character Renuka who escapes from a brother in Delhi after killing a policeman. Later, she seeks refuge in a sex workers community and starts a romance with a 17-year-old prostitute.

The 37-year old actress has earlier worked in Anjan Dutt’s Madly Bangalee in 2009, Netflix’s Masaba Masaba. She worked as production designer for Sanjeev Sharma’s Saat Uchakkey in 2016.

Prior to this, Baby Naaz had received a special mention(child actress) for her work in Boot Polish by Prakash Aurora in the year 1955.

After her win at the Cannes, Anasuya spoke to HT City exclusively and said “I couldn’t believe it was happening! But as I shakily walked to the stage and stood with artists I have admired, my heroes, it felt oddly natural to be welcomed with so much authenticity and love by them. I am so grateful to the jury for seeing my hard work”. She has now boarded her flight back home to India.
